How to Extend the Service Life of Rebar Cutters

Rebar cutters are core equipment for steel bar processing in construction, bridge, tunnel and other engineering projects. They are mainly used to cut steel bars to specifications required for construction and are widely applied and indispensable in modern infrastructure projects. However, improper operations such as untimely removal of iron filings, inadequate maintenance of cutting blades, and cutting steel bars exceeding the equipment’s rated diameter during actual operation will easily accelerate component wear and drastically shorten the service life of the machine. Frequent malfunctions not only push up maintenance costs but also directly delay construction schedules, bringing numerous troubles to on-site operations. This paper shares practical methods to prolong the service life of rebar cutters from the perspectives of standardized operation, daily maintenance and optimization of core components, enabling the equipment to serve engineering construction stably and efficiently.

  1. Standard Operating Requirements
  1. Carry out a full inspection of the equipment before startup: confirm that blades are tightly assembled with standard and compliant blade clearances, check the lubrication status of transmission mechanisms and all moving pairs, and perform no-load trial operation. Do not start cutting until the machine runs without abnormalities.
  2. Control the horizontal clearance between fixed and moving blades at 0.5~1.0 mm. Excessive clearance will cause horseshoe-shaped cuts on steel bars and compromise processing quality. Adjust the vertical overlap of blades according to steel bar diameter: a vertical clearance of 1~2 mm for steel bars below 20 mm in diameter, and approximately 5 mm for steel bars of 20 mm and above. The blade clearance can be adjusted by adding or removing shims behind the fixed blade.
  3. Hold the steel bar firmly during cutting operations. Push the steel bar forward only after the moving blade fully resets to prevent the steel bar end from shaking or popping out and triggering safety accidents.
  4. Place steel bars horizontally to ensure they are perpendicular to the cutting edge. Use pliers to feed short steel bars within 300 mm in length; never push them directly to the cutting edge by hand.
  5. It is strictly forbidden to cut steel bars exceeding the equipment’s rated diameter, as well as medium-carbon steel, high-strength steel and red-hot steel bars.
  6. Do not manually clear iron filings and debris at the blade while the equipment is running. Immediately shut down the machine for maintenance if abnormal noises or abnormal blade fitting occur, and resume operation only after commissioning and normal no-load testing.
  7. For hydraulic rebar cutters, check the hydraulic oil level and motor rotation direction before startup. Loosen the oil drain valve and run the machine under no load for 2 minutes to exhaust air inside the cylinder before tightening the valve.
  8. When using handheld hydraulic cutters, grip the machine body firmly with both hands and wear insulating gloves during operation.

  1. After daily work, clear iron filings and debris on blades and blade seats to keep the whole machine clean. Fully inspect the tightness of all machine bolts and the tension of V-belts, calibrate the clearance between moving and fixed blades as needed, and replace dull and worn blades in a timely manner.
  2. Conduct in-depth periodic maintenance every 400 to 500 operating hours, carefully inspect the wear of gears, bearings and eccentric shafts, and readjust all transmission fit clearances.
  3. Add specified lubricants to designated positions at required intervals:
    • Lithium base grease for eccentric shafts, gear sliding bearings, motor bearings, connecting rod covers and cutters; use ZG-2 grease in winter and ZG-4 grease in summer.
    • HG-11 cylinder oil for machine blade seats.
    • ZG-S graphite grease for gear parts.
